Chakloon Papers Terms

What a record in Chakloon Papers proves and what it does not, why records are public and permanent, and the rules for using the service.

Version 1.0In force from October 16, 2026Updated: October 16, 2026All versions

These terms apply to Chakloon Papers at papers.chakloon.com, a service of Haydamax OÜ, Estonia. They supplement the general Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy and do not replace them. Where these terms say something more specific about Chakloon Papers, they prevail for this service.

What Chakloon Papers does

Chakloon Papers records that a file existed at a certain moment. Your browser computes the SHA-256 hash of the file, a short fingerprint that changes completely if even one byte of the file changes. Chakloon Papers stores this hash together with the time of the record in UTC, the title of the work and the other details listed below, and gives the record a number that begins with PAP. You receive a receipt for the record in JSON form, with a QR code that leads to the record.

Every record needs a title of the work, up to 200 characters. You set it when you make the record, and it cannot be changed afterwards.

Anyone can check a record without signing in, by its number, by its hash or by dropping the file onto the check page.

You create records from your Chakloon Passport account, which is the applicant of the record. The minimum age is 16, as for all Chakloon services, see Minimum age.

What a record proves

A record shows that a file with this hash existed no later than the moment of the record. If someone later presents a file and its hash matches the record, this shows that this exact file existed at that moment.

Keep the exact file that you recorded. A record cannot be checked against a copy that has been edited, converted, compressed or saved again, because such a copy has a different hash.

What a record does not prove

A record does not prove:

  • who created the file or who owns the rights in it;
  • what the file means, or that its content is true or lawful;
  • that the file did not exist earlier, or that it was not changed before the moment of the record;
  • that the applicant was the first or the only person to have the file;
  • anything about a file whose hash differs from the recorded one.

A record in Chakloon Papers is not a qualified electronic time stamp within the meaning of Articles 41 and 42 of Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 (eIDAS). Haydamax OÜ is not a qualified trust service provider and is not on any EU trusted list. A record therefore does not enjoy the legal presumption of accuracy of the date and time that a qualified electronic time stamp has under Article 41(2) eIDAS.

Under Article 41(1) eIDAS, an electronic time stamp may not be denied legal effect and admissibility as evidence in legal proceedings solely because it is in electronic form or does not meet the requirements of a qualified electronic time stamp. A court or another party assesses the weight of a record freely, together with the other evidence. If the law or a contract requires a qualified electronic time stamp, a notarial act or another specific form, a record in Chakloon Papers does not satisfy that requirement.

How records are protected against changes

The hash of the receipt is the SHA-256 hash of the record written in a fixed, canonical JSON form. If anything in the record were changed, the hash computed from it would no longer match the receipt hash you keep.

Today a record is confirmed only by the Chakloon server. Records are not yet linked to one another in a hash chain and are not anchored in any external system, such as a qualified time-stamping service or a public blockchain. A record therefore relies on the integrity of our registry and on the receipt you keep. Save your receipt together with the file.

Your file stays with you

The file itself is never sent to us and never leaves your device. The hash is computed in your browser with its built-in Web Crypto interface. Our servers receive only the hash and a description of the file: its name, its type (MIME type) and its size. When you check a record by dropping a file, the hash is also computed in your browser. We cannot see, restore or send you the content of a file, so keep your own copy.

Public and permanent records

The registry of records is public. Anyone can open a record by its number or its hash, without signing in, and see:

  • the record number and the time of the record in UTC;
  • the title of the work;
  • the name of the applicant, which is your display name in Chakloon Passport, not your @handle and not your e-mail address;
  • the name, type (MIME type) and size of the file;
  • the SHA-256 hash of the file;
  • the text of the statement of the record;
  • the SHA-256 hash of the receipt, a QR code and the receipt in JSON form.

Your e-mail address, your @handle, the identifier of your account and your IP address are stored with the record but are never shown in the registry.

Records are meant to be permanent: a record that could be changed or removed later would prove nothing. Records cannot be edited or deleted through the service.

For this reason, once you make a record, your display name, the title, the file name and the statement become public permanently. Do not put personal data of other people, confidential information, secrets or anything you may later want to remove into them, and give the file a name that reveals nothing you want to keep private.

Personal data and erasure

Records cannot be deleted, and their content cannot be changed. A hash does not reveal the content of the file. We process the data of a record to provide the service you ask for, a public record that anyone can check, and to keep the evidence it is meant to give (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR). Publishing your display name, the title, the file name and the statement is part of that service: you choose to publish them when you make the record.

Your rights under the GDPR, including the right to erasure, apply to the personal data in a record. The right to erasure is not absolute. Under Article 17(3)(e) GDPR it does not apply where keeping the data is necessary for the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims, which is the purpose of the registry: a record that disappeared on request could no longer serve as evidence, for you or for anyone who relies on it. We assess every request individually. The link between a record and your account, your e-mail address, @handle and account identifier, is never public; where it is possible without destroying the evidence of the record, we remove it on request.

To make such a request, write to privacy@chakloon.com from the address of your account. More about your rights is in the Privacy Policy and in Your data.

Limits

Way of use Limit
Website 100 records a day per person
API 50 records a month free, further records paid once payment is switched on

Paid use is governed by Payments, refunds and withdrawal and, for the API, by the API Terms. We may change the limits for the future and tell you in advance.

Acceptable use

You must not:

  • present a record as a qualified electronic time stamp, as proof of authorship or as a confirmation by us of the content of a file;
  • use records to mislead or defraud others;
  • put personal data of other people, secrets of others or illegal content into the title, the file name, the statement or any other text that becomes part of a record;
  • get around the limits, for example by using several accounts, or overload the service;
  • interfere with the registry or try to change or forge records.

The Community Guidelines apply. We may suspend accounts that break these rules, as described in Content moderation and appeals.

Liability

Chakloon Papers is a technical tool. We do not check files, their content or the rights in them, and we are not a party to any dispute in which a record is used. We take care to keep the registry available and its records unchanged, but we do not promise uninterrupted availability. Keep your receipt and your file. Our liability is governed by the Terms of Service. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
