Chakloon Papers

How to record with Chakloon Papers that a file existed at a certain moment, get a receipt, and check a record later.

What it is

Chakloon Papers at papers.chakloon.com records that a file existed at a certain moment. It does this by the file's fingerprint: the SHA-256 hash, a long code that is computed from the content of the file. Any change to the file, even one character, gives a different hash. Papers stores the hash with the date and time and gives you a receipt.

You can use it, for example, to show later that you had a draft, a photo, a contract or a piece of code at a certain date.

Record a file

  1. Open papers.chakloon.com and sign in with your Chakloon Passport.
  2. Choose the file. Its hash is computed in your browser.
  3. Enter the title of the work, up to 200 characters, and confirm the record. The title cannot be changed later.
  4. Save the receipt. It carries the record number, the hash, the date and time and a QR code that leads to the record.

Keep the original file unchanged. Without exactly the same file, the record cannot be matched to it.

On the website you can make up to 100 records a day; through the API, 50 records a month are free.

Check a record

To check a record:

  1. Open papers.chakloon.com. You do not need to sign in to check a record.
  2. Enter the record number or the hash, drag the file into the window, or scan the QR code on the receipt.
  3. If you drag a file, its hash is computed in your browser and compared with the record; the file itself is not sent anywhere.

What a record proves and what it does not

A record shows that a file with this exact hash existed no later than the recorded moment. It does not show who created the file, whether its content is true or lawful, or that you are its author or owner. Chakloon Papers is not a qualified timestamp under the eIDAS Regulation and not a qualified trust service. Whether a court or another party accepts a record as evidence is decided case by case.

The register of records is public, and records cannot be deleted: anyone who has the record number or the hash can see the record, its time, the title, your display name in Chakloon Passport and the name of the file. Treat everything that becomes part of a record as public and permanent.

The rules of the service are in the Chakloon Papers Terms, together with the general Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy.
